Phoenix Magazine Mention!

THE LOFT was voted “Best Place for Signature Scent”, thanks to Peter Mason, our very own perfumer.  This month’s issue, September 2008, of Phoenix magazine features Peter’s perfume parties and designing a signature scent for individuals.   Peter has been here since THE LOFT opened in November, 2007, making personalized perfumes for the ladies and cologne for the gents.   You can find Peter here on Saturdays and he is also available by appointment as well.  This is a fabulous gift idea for anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, etc., and  for a very special someone.

More About the LOFT Art Studio

Kathy Hunter’s art studio, the LOFT Art Studios and Gallery is located in the heart of downtown Scottsdale, Arizona. She has a very unique two story structure that has two distinct features. The downstairs art gallery displays a variety of works by Arizona artists which includes oils, acrylics, and watercolor paintings. Fine art crafts are featured as well, from jewelry, glass, to ceramics.

Kathy’s studio is upstairs where she works on her jewelry and painting and teaches classes in precious metal clay jewelry. As mentioned in a previous post, Jacqueline Roliardi also has studio space upstairs.

From time to time, Kathy features guest instructors to teach classes and workshops on silk painting, mosaics, enameling, and bezel setting, to name a few.

Stay tuned for upcoming events that either Kathy or guests will hold at the LOFT Art Studios and Gallery.

Jacqueline Roliardi - featured artist

Jacqueline Roliardi is our featured artist at THE LOFT Art Studios and Gallery. You will find her work throughout the gallery and upstairs in the studios. She is currently occupying the studio upstairs in a quiet little niche as you pass through the massive stained glass door. On any day, you can hear a tiny voice belting out love songs and hearing her brush hit the canvas. She has a wonderful energy surrounding her and she brings a refreshing breath of fresh air to the gallery when she arrives to paint for the day. She works in acrylics, sometimes oils, and pastels; and she is now working on a “blue” painting, instead of her usual burnt sienna colors. It’s fun to see her challenge herself when she arrives and then to see what she’s done at the end of the day.

Enameling with Terry Cook

Terry and I decided that we could find some time this week to get together and enamel.  We often do that when our schedules allow for it.  And, I’ve been very conscious and aware that I need to create on a regular basis to maintain my sanity.  So it was a “go” for today!

We set everything up, our enamels of different colors, the trivets, the firing forks; we put everything in its place before we started.  Because when we are on a creative roll, we don’t want to stop to look for anything, we want it right there, right now.  Terry has some projects in mind this morning as do I.  I have been working on a ring to enamel since the last time and I plan to do the finishing enameling to it, and then I have another ring to complete, along with a couple of copper pendants.  High hopes for all that to accomplish today but we get as much done as possible.

The kiln is on and we are ready to roll.  I choose my colors and Terry starts working on her pieces.  She decides that she want to drill some holes into her earrings before she enamels.  I put my first piece in and wait til the kiln goes up to temperature.  Fabulous color!  I think I’ll add more.  My ring turns out beautifully and I’m loving it!

Terry is teaching an Enameling Workshop here next Saturday, August 16, 2008 from 10am – 4pm.  If you are in the Scottsdale, Arizona area, please join us, she’s a wonderful teacher and she will take you through the history of enamels, the different techniques, and did I tell you what a perfect fit enameling is with Precious Metal Clay?

Create…no matter what

A recent rough patch in my life has left me in a difficult situation. My mother suffered a stroke the first week in June and was hospitalized for two weeks. In the meantime, I had the shut the doors of my studio and gallery and make her care my first priority. The good thing is that she didn’t suffer any disabling physical trama but was left with no speech and will need 24 hour care.

So, as I’m muddling through all the insurance papers, the bills and arranging for her care, taking care of her with my niece’s help, I realized that I was personally falling apart. My studio and gallery was suffering, my life was no longer as I knew it. But then, I had an epiphany….this wasn’t my entire life, it was only a part of it, and the difficulties I was facing will soon pass. Out of that thought process, came my tiny little voice that said I needed to create.  I arranged for some time one morning to forget about everything and go to my studio and create something. And, so I did. I mindlessly worked on creating one of my PMC pieces and hand-knotting druzy pearls to make a necklace. My life didn’t seem all that hopeless, and I felt that I could manage whatever came along.

No matter what, create!

And so now my air conditioner in the house is broken and we aer in my studio waiting for the repairman. We made a makeshift bed for mom to nap, and I feel the need to create….
